Clinical aspects of Using the Groningen Button for 53 total Laryngectomized Patients – The first report from China

Lixiang Liu , Lide Gu and Harm K. Schutte

Total Laryngectomy is still an important procedure for laryngeal cancer, especially higher stages sufferers, in China. During the period of July 2003 – June 2006, as a first trial in China, 53 total laryngectomized cases (average age 62.4 yeares), were indicated to insert with a Groningen Button for their voice and speech rehabilitation.
Results showed: (1) All 53 button users were inserted for once. (2) All 53 cases succesfully reestablished their efficient voice and intelligibility speech. We thought it could be contributed to our patient-demeonstarte and teach-patient idea and practical program. (3) we also found the button lifetime from our Chinese patients was longer then western reports. It might be related to their diet custom.
