Traditional approaches to musical theater singing have focused on twomain types of vocal production: the classically-based style legit’ and the yelling-based style called ‘belting’. As time has progressed, expectations have risen to high standards regarding
versatility of technique and character-based timbral choices.
Nowadays, musical theater performers are often expected to have mastered style subsets such as operetta, legit, belting, pop, rock, jazz and soul. This presentation will explore the new standards of technical and stylistic ability required in today’s competitive professional musical theater world.
