Ron Baken

Ron Baken is Professor Emeritus of Speech Science at Columbia University, New York, and consulting physiologist in the Department of Otolaryngology at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, an important specialty hospital in Manhattan. He is the co-author (with Robert Orlikoff) of Clinical Measurement of Speech and Voice, the book that has become internationally accepted as the go-to text for answers and guidance about why and how to apply acoustic and physiologic evaluation methods. For the past several years Dr. Baken has been an advocate of the applicability of nonlinear dynamical systems theory –the “theory of chaos”—to problems of laryngeal physiology and dysfunction, a subject on which he can enthuse endlessly. Hence, his gratitude for the opportunity to offer this tutotial.
