Identifying resonance strategies in the singing voice through spectrum
analysis

Don G. Miller

Spectrum analysis has brought a new era to the centuries-old pursuit
of "resonance" by singers, and it is now practical to analyze both
live singing and recordings for (lack of) success with a variety of
resonance strategies. The subject is complex, however, and there is
much to learn. Using the software VoceVista we will look at aspects of
singing where the use of resonance is both precise and critical:
passaggio, high notes, male-female differences, the singer's formant,
open/closed and forward/back vowels.
