Coaching professional announcers in public services. Aim sharing ideas with colleagues

Fransje van Luin

A non-scientific presentation sharing my experience as voice teacher, trainer and coach for announcers, especially in public services such as airports and train transport. In the Netherlands there seems to be little importance attached to how public announcements are presented.
What about the global importance ?
From my experience at Schiphol airport (the biggest in the Netherlands) and with ProRail (the Netherlands' most important train company) there is a growing awareness of the need to educate announcers in speech and voice use, though they offer a very tight training schedule and there is much resistance to change.
Targets in this work; to raise awareness of the importance of using voice and speech, to make the announcers aware of what passengers would like to hear and to challenge them to practice and maintain their skills.
Questions I would like to deal with during my presentation:
What role should a voice teacher play in tight working conditions; how to get the work done in a limited schedule? How can you deal with resistance to change?
What tools do announcers need and practice to keep their voices in good condition (voice maintenance)?
What are the best postures and what are the possibilities in view of their working conditions?
How should they use the microphone and apparatus best concerning voice maintenance? How should they use their breath (stress control), voice and speech? What kind of experiences can we share and what can we learn from each other?
