Stress management and voice
Van Opstal M.J.M.C, and Wellens W.A.R.
The authors will present a strategy for “ Voicing with Eustress” and "Stress Management in dysphonia".
A model for skill training that provides the cues for stress-regulation, combined with effective voicing and speaking, will be presented.
The approach is based on their “Stress-and-voicing” model which provides a rationale for: 1. Optimal use of the voice in order to prevent voice problems and to reach the highest level of vocal expression. Self-control is proposed at different levels: physiological, kinetic and mental. Vocal communication is operationalised in emotional, motor, interpersonal, and organisational targets for (re) learning of voice habits. Optimal performance requires a subtle coordination on at least four levels of motor skills: posture, respiration, phonation and articulation. The interdependence of these functions becomes evident as well as their vulnerability on stress control by physical conditions and mental attitude.
2. Both the biological and the behavioural approach in the therapy management of voice disorders and dysfunctions.
